Are all patients adjusted the same way?

Are all patients adjusted the same way?

A common question that is asked from patients is if everyone is adjusted the same way and the short answer is no! Each patient’s spine and care plan is unique. Each individual patient is analyzed and examined for his or her age, condition and health goals. There are a wide variety of spinal patterns.  There are several different chiropractic techniques and philosophies to choose from which will accommodate different types of people. In general, most patients get chiropractic care depending on their needs.  Proper tests and exams followed by a series of x-rays on the initial consultation help guide the chiropractor to the sources of the spinal problem.  Some adjusting methods can produce a “popping” sound when the gas and fluids in the joint shift. The sound is interesting, but it is not a guide to the quality or value of the chiropractic treatment.

5 easy ways to maintain a healthy mind, body, and spirit during retirement

5 easy ways to maintain a healthy mind, body, and spirit during retirement

  • Chiropractic: Chiropractic care promotes long-term pain relief for senior patients. Chiropractic care will also increase mobility and improve balance.  Better quality sleep, improved mood, and higher energy levels can all be attained by older adults who seek chiropractic care on a regular basis.
  • Purpose: Many studies amongst different demographics have shown that maintaining a strong sense of purpose is associated with a host of positive attributes at these ages. One way that many retirees find purpose in retirement is by volunteering their time and labor at homeless shelters and animal shelters.
  • Social network: Maintaining a good social life adds meaning to life and strengthens self-worth. Staying socially connected can also provide support, making it easier to handle problems and gives us something to do and someone to do it with. Start by finding a group of people with common interest and join a book club or partake in weekly game nights.
  • Stay active: Staying active in retirement benefits your physical and mental health and discovers some of your hidden skills, exciting hobbies, and talents that you might have. It can also keep your cognitive function from aging and supports you to stay mentally active compared to other older adults. Some ways to stay active during retirement could include tennis, golf, gardening, bowling, etc.
  • Mental stimulation: Retirees can do things to keep their brains as sharp as when they were working, and they are easy to do. The more active our minds are, the less likely it is that seniors develop mental health problems and physical disabilities. Word games, puzzles, card games, and reading are all ways you can stimulate your brain during retirement.

How You Can Properly Lift to Avoid Back Strain

How You Can Properly Lift to Avoid Back Strain

It is important to learn and understand the correct way to lift heavy objects in order to reduce the risk of long or short term back injuries. Bad, improper form while lifting can cause muscle strains, tears, serious back injuries, joint pain, and much more. Practicing proper form prevents back injury and allows your muscles to work harder to increase overall strength.

Here are some tips on how to lift heavy objects.

1. Wide stance/ object close to body                     5. Straddle object to be lifted

2. Bend knees and hips                                          6. Never hold your breath

3. Maintain a straight spine                                   7. Wear a brace for back support

4. No bending or twisting

Is Your Computer Damaging Your Posture?

Is Your Computer Damaging Your Posture?

This is how you can maintain good posture while working on the computer

Since online school and working from home has become our new norm here are a few tips and tricks to maintain good posture. One of the most common postural issues is forward head posture, some of the many things that lead to forward head posture is computer ergonomics, video games, and backpacks. Positioning computer screens too low leads to looking down and  moving the head forward to read the screen. To avoid forward head posture, you will need to reposition your work area. Start by keeping hips, knees, and elbows at 90 degrees. Along with having the computer screen just above eye level and having your keyboard close to your bellybutton with your elbows on an armrest. Keeping your back upright with a pillow supporting the curve in your low back is key. Every 20-30 minutes, sit up straight and pull the neck and head back over the shoulders.

How Chiropractic Care Can  Be The Answer To Opioid Epidemic

Addiction to opioid pain killers has been one of the top concerns in both the medical field and government. The number one reason an MD may prescribe an opioid pain killer is because of BACK PAIN! Most patients tend to rush to medical doctors when they have pain, they want relief and expect medications to do the magic. The pressure for instant relief leads many doctors to prescribe opioid pain medications despite the known issue of opioid addictions. After the short term relief these patients experience, they start going around different doctors hoping for another prescription even though their primary issues is being untreated. The worst part of all is that many of the conditions they "treat" with opioids can be treated and resolved fully with chiropractic care and physical rehabilitation.Chiropractic treatment is a proven tool for pain management. Regular adjustments help to realign the spine and prevent permanent damage to bones and soft tissue. Techniques such as spinal manipulation, therapeutic massage, deep tissue techniques, and electronic stimulation release endorphins that help to block pain receptors in the brain as well as realign the systems of the body. Call today and get your body on track through regular chiropractic care!

Chiropractic care and Athletes

Many athletes see a chiropractic to improve their performance, range of motion, and flexibility. Chiropractic care is beneficial for athletes on a regular basis not just when injured. Athletes that receive adjustments regularly may notice an improvement in their performances, endurance, blood flow, and coordination. Its proven that high impact sports such as basketball, football, golf, and even swimming can cause the same amount of stress and strain on the body as a auto accident. Many professional athletes receive chiropractic care frequently for example, Tiger Woods, Tom Brady, Evander Holyfield, and Jerry Rice. As Tiger Woods once said "I've been going to chiropractors for as long as I can remember. It's as important to my training as practicing my swing."

Can TMJ Be Helped By Chiropractic Care?

TMJ can act like a sliding hinge connecting your jawbone to your skull. Headaches, neck aches, and poor alignment can all be causes of TMJ. With chiropractic care there are many different techniques used to relieve TMJ pain. For example, NUCCA technique is a gentle physical touch on the first vertebrae in the neck used to restore balance in the spine, along with many other upper cervical techniques. TMJ pain can cause a loss of sleep, getting adjusted and putting your neck into proper alignment can reduce those pains as well as get you more sleep. After all, TMJ is a joint and chiropractors are experts on muscles and joints. If you're having TMJ pains and your sleep and neck is getting affected, don't hesitate and call today!

How Herniated Disc And Bulged Disc Can Be Treated Through Chiropractic Care

Most herniated and bulged disc occur from poor posture and improper alignment. With chiropractic care there are many techniques used to help herniated and bulged disc. For example, decompression, physical therapy, and most importantly the adjustments. Herniated disc can be caused by many daily activities you may perform like lifting, bending, and everyday activities. Two techniques used to treat herniated discs are flexion distraction technique and pelvic blocking technique. Flexion distraction technique is done on a special table that stretches out the back and spinal column, by shifting the disc back away from the nerve, pain and inflammation can reduce.
Pelvic blocking is when the patient lays down on the table with cushioned wedges placed under the pelvis, these cushions alter your posture and temporarily alleviate pressure on your spine and discs.

5 Reasons to see a doctor even after a minor car accident

  • Damage to your car is not a sign of damage to your body (impacts as littles as 10 mph can cause injury)
  • Not all injuries show up right on scene ( often can take days even weeks to show up)
  • In many cases car accidents can result in permanent injury if not addressed quickly
  • If you have significant injury without evaluation or treatment you can't sue for bodily injury
  • In some states you have only 14 days to be seen by a doctor

Should I get Adjusted when I'm Sick?

The answer to that is always yes! Chiropractic adjustments promote health in a variety of ways and even increases the body’s ability to heal from sickness with a greater speed. Getting adjusted is an immune booster, research has shown that chiropractic adjustments increases immune system activity. There are also many natural solutions that chiropractors can offer you, for example a nasaline rinsing system and a defense inhaler which will instantly have you breathing free. Chiropractors also commonly treat patients who have nervous system disorders and musculoskeletal disorders, such as osteoporosis. The chiropractic adjustment restores spinal range of motion and allows for optimal nervous system function. Because the immune system is under control of the nervous system, it also would have the opportunity to function better. You’ll improve your chances of getting well sooner, and you’ll likely suffer less and feel better.

Does chiropractic care help with loss of hearing?

How chiropractic care helps with loss of hearing

The first chiropractic adjustment given in 1895 was reported to have cured deafness. Chiropractic care releases pressure on eustachian tubes allowing ears to drain naturally. A study examined the effects of a single, initial chiropractic visit on the central nervous system by documenting clinical changes of audiometry in patients after chiropractic care. Fifteen patients are presented with ages between 37 and 71. All patients were classified as hearing impaired though greater on the right,  6 had hearing restored, 7 improved and 2 had no change. Adjustments to the thoracic spine, (T6) the right sacroiliac joint and restrictions on the right side of the neck (C2–C4) were adjusted, with an audible pop detected during the manipulation, the patients reported a sudden improvement of hearing.

Following chiropractic care not only improves a misaligned vertebrae but improves loss of hearing, and reduces ear infections. If your suffering from loss of hearing come get your free consultation!

Ice Vs. Heat For Injuries and Pain

Ice and heat for therapeutic purposes are both tried and true self-treatment options that have little to no associated cost or risk.  This makes them common go-tos for everything from sprains to muscle spasms, but understanding which therapy is best for a given injury is often a point of confusion.  The two serve important but different purposes and cannot be used interchangeably.  In order to make these treatments effective and avoid exacerbating a painful condition, it’s important to understand the function of each.

WHEN TO APPLY HEAT
Ask anyone with chronic pain, and most will tell you that they rely regularly on heat as a means to relieve their symptoms.  Discomfort associated with stiffness or cramping typically responds best.  Patients who have injuries from over-exertion, knots, muscle tension, arthritis and trigger points are most likely to have a positive response to thermotherapy.

Of course, there are conditions which can be made worse by application of heat.  Fresh injuries, infections, and inflammation should never be subjected to heat therapy.  Determining the difference between an actual injury with damage and soreness can be difficult, especially when conditions such as chronic back pain are all too common.  If you aren’t sure of the nature of your pain, seek guidance from your chiropractor before attempting any form of self-treatment.

WHEN TO APPLY ICE
While heat serves its purpose, ice is the relied upon method to quickly soothe injury and inflammation.  Common conditions which may benefit from cryotherapy include sprains, bruises, strains, tendonitis, and headaches.  By applying ice to these injuries, nerve endings become numb, capillaries constrict, and metabolic activity slows, all adding up to less inflammation and pain.  Used within the first 24-48 hours of an injury, ice can have a positive impact.

The confusion over when to use ice or heat is understandable.  When in doubt, remember that ice is best used on new injuries to numb pain and reduce bruising and inflammation, and heat is best suited for aching joints or tight muscles that will benefit from increased blood flow.  Both are good self-treatment options when used appropriately.

Of course, ice and heat may offer some temporary, symptomatic relief, but they will do little good to help heal an injury or reduce the ability of chronic pain to interfere with day-to-day life.  For treatment of these types of conditions, seek the aid of your physician or chiropractor.  Particularly for pain originating from soft tissue injuries in the neck or back, chiropractic can provide even greater relief than pain medication, epidural injections, or other available therapies.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help Your Blood Pressure

How Chiropractic Care Can Help Your Blood Pressure

Regardless of race, age, or gender, anyone can develop high blood pressure. It is estimated that one in every four American adults have high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases the risk for heart disease and stroke, which are the first and third leading causes of death for Americans.  Most people try to address high blood pressure by taking medications. The problem with this approach is that it treats the effect, not the cause. The drug approach also subjects patients to serious side effects.

Studies support a wellness approach to tackling the blood pressure dilemma. A study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics examined the effects of chiropractic adjustments on high blood pressure. The study concluded that chiropractic adjustments were an effective and safe alternative to the medical model. The men and women who participated in the study and received chiropractic care experienced a significant decrease in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The individuals who were in the control group and the placebo group did not experience this same improvement. In another published study from the same journal, 75 people who suffered from high blood pressure received specific chiropractic adjustments. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased in the adjusted group. Also noted in that study was that the people with the highest pretreatment blood pressure experienced the greatest benefit!

5 Reasons Why Senior Citizens Should Receive Chiropractic Care

1. Pain relief: Chiropractors have the ability to fix the subluxations within the spine that cause pain and inflammation, without the use of medication.

2. Lower risk of falls: Chiropractic care is helpful in this area as it helps to minimize subluxations in the spine and helps patients learn to stretch and exercise to improve their balance and strength throughout their senior years.

3. Natural treatment: it is important to find a way to find relief without the need to take medication.

4. Help with chronic conditions: After four weeks of chiropractic care, these study participants experienced a decreased number of adverse events and had a higher quality of life.

5. Decreased Joint Degeneration:  Chiropractic care decreases spinal degeneration and other arthritic changes by normalizing the spinal alignment and reducing spinal stress.

Chiropractic Use Decreases Costs for Medicare Patients with Low Back Pain

One recent study found that older multiple-comorbid patients who used only chiropractic manipulative therapy during their chronic low back pain episodes had lower overall costs of care, shorter episodes and a lower cost of care per episode day than patients in the other treatment groups. Further, costs of care for the episode and per episode day were lower for patients who used a combination of chiropractic manipulative therapy and conventional medical care compared with patients who did not use chiropractic manipulative therapy.

Medicare does cover the cost of chiropractic adjustments. This is great for senior citizens because most seniors rely on Medicare to help with the cost of their healthcare expenses.  Furthermore, Medicare has found that chiropractic is a beneficial form of treatment for the management of lower back pain and many other conditions.

Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?

Not only is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy, it is very beneficial as well.
1. Getting adjusted during your pregnancy will help maintain a healthier pregnancy, it will reduce back pains, help control nausea, and most importantly shift your pelvis into alignment as your body prepares for labor.
2. When your pelvis is out of alignment it can restrict the amount of space available for your developing baby. Regular visits to a chiropractor can help with these all these issues, about 75% of pregnant women report pain relief after getting frequent adjustments.

A routine with chiropractic care will help manage pain in your back, hips, joints, and will establish pelvic balance. When your pelvis is aligned correctly it will provide your baby with all the space needed and may lead to a faster and easier delivery. One of the main techniques used for pregnant women is the Webster adjustment. This technique is a specific sacral adjustment to help ease the mothers pelvic alignment and nerve system. It is extremely gentle and safe and uses no direct external force on the baby. Come in for a FREE consultation with the doctor to have a healthier and easier pregnancy!

5 Ways You Can Relieve Your Neck Pain And Back Pain

1. FOLLOWING AN ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DIET. You are what you eat. Since everyone is different, there isn't a single anti inflammatory diet for everyone. Try to include a diet full of turmeric, ginger, and boswellia.  Turmeric ginger tea is one of my favorites. When an anti-inflammatory diet is done successfully, it will relieve neck and back pain.

2. GOOD POSTURE HABITS. It is important to practice good posture habits to prevent neck or back pain.  Good posture reduces stress on the spine. One of the biggest culprits of bad posture is sitting at the computer or on the phone. Prolonged sitting is considered “the new smoking”.  It has been shown to shorten people's life span.

3. EXERCISING. Back pain and neck pain can occur from living a sedentary lifestyle.  I always encourage my patients to stay active and keep the spine moving! Spinal joints that make up the back and neck like other joints require movement to heal.

4. MEDITATE. By simply being stressed out, muscle tension, misalignment, and nerve irritation can occur. Leading to neck and back pain. Find a meditation technique you like and do it for at least 15 minutes per day, ideally in the morning. Guided meditations can be found online to help you to relax.

5. GETTING A CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT. Yes it's true, even chiropractors need an adjustment sometimes. Chiropractic is essential to a healthy body and has been proven to alleviate back pain and neck pain. Poor alignment of the back and neck puts pressure on nerves and cause muscles to spasm.
