Why Should I Have Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy?

During pregnancy, there are several emotional and hormonal changes that occur in preparation for creating the environment for the developing baby.

The following changes can result in a misaligned spine or joints:

  • An enlarged abdomen and increased back curve
  • Loosening of the pelvic joints
  • Postural adaptations
  • Establishing pelvic balance and alignment is another reason to obtain chiropractic care during pregnancy.

When the pelvis is misaligned it may reduce the amount of room available for the developing baby. This restriction is called intrauterine constraint. Leading to prevention of the fetus to turn head down therefore increasing risk of breech births.

This can affect the mother’s ability to have a natural, non-invasive birth. Breech and posterior positions can interfere with the natural ease of labor and lead to interventions such as c-sections.

The nervous system is the master communication system to all the body systems including the reproductive system. Keeping the spine aligned helps the entire body work more effectively.

What are the benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy?

Chiropractic care during pregnancy can provide benefits for women who are pregnant.

Potential benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy include:

  • Maintaining a healthier pregnancy
  • Controlling symptoms of nausea
  • Reducing the time of labor and delivery
  • Relieving back, neck or joint pain
  • Preventing a potential cesarean delivery

Solutions To Forward Head Posture

The effects of bad posture to your overall health are paramount. “Posture affects and moderates every physiologic function from breathing to hormonal production. Spinal pain, headache, mood, blood pressure, pulse and lung capacity are among functions most easily influenced by posture.  The most common posture problem is forward head posture.” (American Journal of Physical Medicine 1994;4:36-39).  Since we live in a world that revolves around computers, televisions, and video games forward head posture is becoming more and more prevalent.  Ideally the head should sit directly on the shoulders and neck.  When the head starts to come forward, out of alignment, it puts strain on your neck and upper back muscles.  Over time forward head posture can lead to tension headaches, disc herniation, pinched nerves, and arthritis. Here are some solutions to help you change your forward head posture problem.

1. The first step is to determine where and when throughout your day you are exposed to prolong forward head posture. The most common places forward head posture occurs are; while on a computer, playing video games, and while driving.  Next you should actively work towards taking steps to fix this problem.  See our previous post on !!!!!!!!!!

2. Every half hour set a reminder on your phone to sit up straight, pull your head back over your shoulders and hold for 3-5 seconds and do 12-15 reps.

3. When you are sitting for a prolonged period of time, always use a lower back support pillow.  By taking pressure off of your lower back, your head will naturally move back over the shoulders.

4. Set up a consultation with a chiropractor. The chiropractor will determine the severity of your forward head posture.  You and your chiropractor will develop a personal care plan.

*If you have a severe injury that requires immediate medical attention such as; impaired consciousness as a result of striking your head, intense headaches, profuse bleeding, altered vision go to your local emergency room for evaluation.

Whiplash; What Is It And Can A Chiropractor Help?

You're waiting at a red light in your car.  All of the sudden you hear screeching tires and the sound of another car colliding with yours.  A split second later you feel your car jolt forward from the impact.  You've just been rear ended.  Upon impact your seat harshly pushes you from behind.  However the impact to the head is delayed due to the neck isolating the head.  Next your body gets thrown forward into the seatbelt while your head starts moving backwards in the opposite direction.  Unrestrained by the seatbelt, your head moves uncontrollably back and forth.  You just became a victim of whiplash.

What happened in a split second can affect you for the next week, months, or even years.  Common symptoms of whiplash include but are not limited to;
Neck pain
Neck stiffness
Reduced range of motion in the neck
Headaches
Blurred vision
Dizziness

Even if you were in a minor car accident, you should be evaluated by a chiropractor.  The symptoms listed above do not always present themselves immediately or at all.  But damage to the spine can still exist!  Don't disregard your own injuries because little or no damage is done to your car.  Pain medicine won't heal damaged ligaments or tendons!  Muscle relaxers won't heal torn muscles! Specific chiropractic spinal adjustments are necessary to restore proper motion and ensure proper healing.

If you suffered serious injuries it is recommended you go to a hospital and have your injuries documented.

Herniated Disc; How Do They Become Herniated And How Can We Prevent Them?

Between each backbone or vertebrae there are cushions made out of fibrous cartilage.  These cushion are also known as intervertebral discs.  The purpose of these discs is to allow movement throughout the spine while also absorbing impact and stress.  Weakness or injury can cause the disc to become to compressed, resulting in a portion of the disc to protrude into surrounding areas.  This can put pressure on surrounding nerves resulting in neck pain, back pain and other symptoms.

A herniated disc, or slipped disc, usually occurs when excessive force is place upon the disc.  Common ways to herniate a disc include; lifting heavy objects, poor lifting habits, significant falls, a car accident, or even poor posture habits.  Also any kind of excessive tension over time can result in a slipped disc.  Warning signs that you have a herniated disc are not always obvious.  If the neck area is affected, pain can radiate down the arms.  Also numbness and tingling can occur in the hands.  If the lower back area is affected, pain can radiate down the leg.  This is also known as sciatica.

How can we prevent disc herniation?

Maintain
Regular wellness and flexibility

Stay Fit
An exercise program keeps the body strong and resilient.

Lift Smart
Bend knees and lift objects close to the body.

Visit a chiropractor regularly
Workout a maintenance schedule with your chiropractor to prevent a herniated disc.

When Should I See A Chiropractor After a Car Accident?

Immediately after a car accident, emotions are running high and adrenaline is pumping.  This can make it easy to ignore possible injuries.  While some injuries are obvious, other injuries you might not feel immediately after the car accident.  But once the adrenaline wears off, it is common people experience symptoms due the impact of the car accident.  Symptoms can include but are not limited to;
Neck pain
Neck stiffness
Reduced range of motion in the neck
Shoulder pain
Lower back pain
Arm pain
Headaches
Blurred vision
Dizziness

An impact as little as 10 MPH “fender bender” can increase g forces on your spine leading to significant injury.  That is why it is recommended that you have your spine evaluated by a chiropractor.  In the state of Florida you have 14 days after a car accident to seek medical treatment covered by your car insurance.  Chiropractors are uniquely suited to evaluate and treat car accident victims.  Only 10% of the nerves in your body can feel pain.  The other 90% control function of organs, muscles, etc.  So therefore even if you don't feel pain, whiplash and herniated disc injuries could be present.  You should always seek out chiropractic treatment right away to determine the extent of your injury especially within the 14 day window under your car insurance.  After the 14 days any treatment will not be covered by car insurance.

If you suffered serious injuries it is recommended you go to a hospital and have your injuries documented.
