The effects of bad posture to your overall health are paramount. “Posture affects and moderates every physiologic function from breathing to hormonal production. Spinal pain, headache, mood, blood pressure, pulse and lung capacity are among functions most easily influenced by posture. The most common posture problem is forward head posture.” (American Journal of Physical Medicine 1994;4:36-39). Since we live in a world that revolves around computers, televisions, and video games forward head posture is becoming more and more prevalent. Ideally the head should sit directly on the shoulders and neck. When the head starts to come forward, out of alignment, it puts strain on your neck and upper back muscles. Over time forward head posture can lead to tension headaches, disc herniation, pinched nerves, and arthritis. Here are some solutions to help you change your forward head posture problem.
1. The first step is to determine where and when throughout your day you are exposed to prolong forward head posture. The most common places forward head posture occurs are; while on a computer, playing video games, and while driving. Next you should actively work towards taking steps to fix this problem. See our previous post on !!!!!!!!!!
2. Every half hour set a reminder on your phone to sit up straight, pull your head back over your shoulders and hold for 3-5 seconds and do 12-15 reps.
3. When you are sitting for a prolonged period of time, always use a lower back support pillow. By taking pressure off of your lower back, your head will naturally move back over the shoulders.
4. Set up a consultation with a chiropractor. The chiropractor will determine the severity of your forward head posture. You and your chiropractor will develop a personal care plan.
